    Abbey Newell is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Coordinator of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy program at The Refinery Integrated Wellness Center. She received her B.A. from The University of Arizona, and her Master’s Degree in Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy from Brandman University. She has completed two years of a doctoral program at Alliant International University, earning the highest honors in academics.

    Ms. Newell practices from a behavioral perspective, using a variety of evidenced based treatments including Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to help clients manage mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety, depression, personality disorders and trauma. She has a special interest and extensive experience treating Borderline Personality Disorder. She offers a culturally sensitive perspective and is an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community.

    Her pre-licensure training was completed at The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. as a MFT trainee. This was followed by three years at Stars Behavioral Health Group in Indio, Calif. and Riverside University Health System Behavioral Health in Palm Springs, Calif as a MFT intern. During this time, she worked as a primary therapist at Full-Service Partnership outpatient programs to provide wrap-around care to people with complex and co-morbid mental health diagnoses. She worked within a multi-disciplinary team to provide the highest level of care.

    Ms. Newell received two years of extensive training and supervision in Dialectical Behavior Therapy. She has practiced dialectical behavior therapy since 2012, and continues to complete ongoing education. She has implemented and developed several Dialectical Behavior Programs throughout the Coachella Valley as a licensed clinician including adolescent and adult tracks. She is passionate about Dialectical Behavior Therapy which helps clients learn effective behaviors to deal with particular situations and to find a meaningful balance between accepting situations and creating change strategies.

    Ms. Newell has a non-judgmental, validating and kind approach to care. She is passionate about helping people learn skills to be kind to themselves, and works to help people reduce suffering. As a DBT clinician for more than 10 years, she has observed how the skills and therapy significantly improve a person’s quality of life.
